Artist Statement

Idris Olabode Opeyemi, a Lagos-based ceramic artist, passionately engages in the art of pottery, seamlessly merging traditional techniques with contemporary creativity. His work embodies a captivating dance with clay, transcending the boundaries between ancient and modern realms. Rooted in Yoruba culture, Olabode's creations intricately weave narratives, philosophies, and emotions, exploring the profound duality of existence—harmony and chaos, tradition and modernity.

As a Lagos-based ceramic artist, I began my journey in ceramics by blending traditional techniques with modern creativity. My work beautifully reflects a dance with clay that spans ancient and contemporary realms. Rooted in Yoruba culture, my creations narrate stories, philosophies, and emotions, exploring the duality of existence—harmony and chaos, tradition and modernity. Each piece, from vessels adorned with tribal marks to seemingly fragile yet resilient sculptures, captures life's essence. For me, clay is not merely a medium; it's a living canvas absorbing energy, history, and sentiments.

My alchemy of glazes seeks the perfect hues to evoke emotions and memories. The kiln becomes a transformative portal, converting raw earth into vessels that transcend function, inviting contemplation. My practice, rooted in cultural storytelling, transcends borders to spark conversations about identity, resilience, and humanity's interconnectedness. My work communicates the intangible, inviting viewers to explore the depths of their own narratives. In the fusion of tradition and innovation, I create a visual language that resonates universally. Whether through functional pottery or conceptual sculptures, each piece contributes to a larger narrative—a visual symphony connecting hearts, minds, and cultures. Beyond the studio, I extend my journey to the community. As a self-taught ceramist, I passionately share the therapeutic benefits of pottery through workshops and mentorship, empowering others to find solace and expression in this tactile art form, fostering a sense of belonging and healing in the hands that mold the clay.
