Idris Olabode Opeyemi
Ceramic & Glass Artist | Storyteller Through Clay and Light
I am Idris Olabode Opeyemi, a Lagos-based ceramic and glass artist whose work bridges tradition and contemporary innovation. Rooted in Yoruba culture, my journey with clay and glass is a dance—one that merges the ancient wisdom of my heritage with modern creative exploration.
My pieces are more than objects; they are vessels of stories, philosophies, and emotions. Through intricate porcelain forms and translucent glass, I explore the dualities of existence: harmony and chaos, strength and fragility, tradition and modernity. Each work—whether adorned with batik-inspired patterns or sculpted to embrace light—narrates life’s essence, inviting viewers to reflect and connect with their own stories.
Clay, to me, is a living canvas, absorbing energy, history, and sentiment, while glass transforms light into emotion, adding a new dimension to storytelling. The kiln and the furnace become portals of transformation—where earth meets fire, and raw materials emerge as objects that transcend mere function. My alchemy of glazes and my experimentation with glass evoke a delicate balance of resilience and fragility, sparking contemplation and connection.
My practice, deeply rooted in cultural storytelling, merges the intricate scarifications of African traditions with modern materials. Through this union of clay and glass, I honor the past while reimagining its future, creating a visual language that resonates across borders and generations.
Beyond the studio, I extend my passion to the community. As a self-taught artist, I understand the transformative power of tactile art. Through workshops and mentorship, I share the therapeutic beauty of clay and glass, empowering others to find solace, creativity, and self-expression in these mediums.
In each piece, I celebrate the convergence of earth, fire, and light—an alchemy that shapes not only materials but also connections. This is my offering: vessels of clay and glass, shaped by hand, heart, and history
